Two women who met as college friends keep a rivalry going for twenty years, and nobody on the page can say who is winning. Liz Hamilton (Jacqueline Bisset) writes the kind of novels the critics admire, while Merry Noel Blake (Candice Bergen) writes to get rich, and each watches what the other does with her success. This was George Cukor's last film, and he stays close to the two women as the years go by.
