Lucky Gagin (Robert Montgomery) wants money from Frank Hugo (Fred Clark), a gangster he means to blackmail, and he has come to find him. Robert Montgomery directs himself in a story from Dorothy B. Hughes's novel, with a screenplay by Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer. Gagin gets help from a young girl, Pila (Wanda Hendrix), and a carousel owner, Pancho (Thomas Gomez), but trusts neither of them, because he has been alone too long.
