“She did everything wrong, but got everything right.”

Beverly Donofrio (Drew Barrymore) wants to be a writer, and in 1965 she is fifteen and has a baby. She marries Ray Hasek (Steve Zahn), the boy who got her pregnant, and tries to build a household with a husband who is hooked on drugs. Penny Marshall, directing her last feature, covers the years from 1961 to 1986 and keeps the comedy and the hard parts in the same room.
