“The dead travel fast”

Alan Parker (Jonathan Jackson) is an art student at the University of Maine in 1969, so taken up with death that he tries to end his life on his birthday, and his friends stop him. Then comes word that his mother, Jean (Barbara Hershey), has had a stroke, and he sets out to hitchhike to her hospital bed. Mick Garris adapts Stephen King's novella, and every ride Alan accepts along the way puts him one stranger closer to a mother who may not last until he arrives.
