In 1993 Los Angeles, a woman is found dead in a skyscraper that belongs to a large Japanese corporation. Detectives Web Smith (Wesley Snipes) and John Connor (Sean Connery) are called in, and Connor, who has worked in Japan, is meant to be the one who can read the room. Philip Kaufman builds the film on the two of them, the younger man's patience wearing thin against the older man's habit of saying less.
