“Tomorrow is my birthday.”
A filmmaker (Shunji Iwai) has lost his faith in the work, and drifts through his days with a video camera he barely points at anything. Then he meets a young woman (Ayako Fujitani) who says the same line every day, "Tomorrow is my birthday," and he starts trying to reach her through the lens. Hideaki Anno's film is about how little it takes for two lonely people to keep each other company, and how hard it is to say so aloud.
