Rob Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) borrows a large sum from the Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) to buy cattle and drive them to market, hoping to lift his highland village out of poverty. When the money is stolen, Michael Caton-Jones follows him into a feud with the nobleman and his hired men, with his wife Mary (Jessica Lange) at his side. Underneath it runs a plain argument about honour: whether a poor man's word weighs as much as a lord's.
