How does Roger Swanson (Campbell Scott), an ad executive in New York, get women to go home with him? He says it comes down to reading their emotions from the first second and steering them. When his teenage nephew Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) shows up wanting lessons, Dylan Kidd sends the two of them out into the city for a night. Roger talks, Nick listens, and the older man's confidence is tested against a boy who is watching him closely.
