“Major Charles Rane has come home to war!”

Major Charles Rane (William Devane) comes home to Texas after years as a prisoner in Vietnam, and within days armed men break into his house. They take his right hand, and his family does not survive the night. He sets out after the men responsible, with Johnny Vohden (Tommy Lee Jones), a fellow veteran, beside him. John Flynn shoots the whole thing in flat daylight and dull rooms, working from a Paul Schrader story.
