In 1981 New York, a petrochemical chairman is murdered, and his widow Lee Winters (Jane Fonda) is left holding the controlling interest in his company. Banker Hubbell Smith (Kris Kristofferson) is sent to look into the liquidity of the new bank behind her late husband's business. Alan J. Pakula follows the two of them into an international money scheme, one where the whole world's economy is the thing at risk.
