Rome, Open City

(1945)Directed by Roberto Rossellini104 minDrama, War
“Our battle has barely begun.”

Giorgio Manfredi (Marcello Pagliero), a Resistance leader in Rome in 1944, needs somewhere to hide and a way out of the city while the Nazis hunt him. A Catholic priest, Don Pietro (Aldo Fabrizi), and a neighbor named Pina (Anna Magnani) are among the ordinary people drawn into helping him. Roberto Rossellini's film shows how a frightened population chooses, one household at a time, whether to protect a stranger.
