Joe Lampton (Laurence Harvey) arrives in a Yorkshire mill town in 1950s England to take a post as an accountant, and he has already decided he is not staying at the bottom. He sets his sights on Susan Brown (Heather Sears), the daughter of the wealthy factory owner, while falling for Alice Aisgill (Simone Signoret), a married woman older than he is. Jack Clayton follows Joe as he works out how far he will go for a place among the town's rich.
