Rosa Luxemburg
Why does a Polish woman who has never held office keep landing in German prisons? Rosa Luxemburg (Barbara Sukowa) is a Marxist agitator in early twentieth-century Poland and Germany, and her speeches and pamphlets keep pulling her toward the revolution and the Spartacist League. Margarethe von Trotta stays with her through the cells, and the film settles on Sukowa at a barred window, still writing.
