In 2009, Maziar Bahari (Gael García Bernal) is covering Iran's elections for Newsweek when authorities pull him from his family home and put him in prison. The interrogator he comes to know only by smell, Javadi (Kim Bodnia), cites a comedy interview Bahari gave The Daily Show as proof that he is working for American spies. Jon Stewart, directing his first feature, adapts Bahari's memoir and keeps the camera close on a man who is questioned and held in a small room.
