“Trust everyone... But always cut the cards.”

Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) knows poker better than anyone at the table, and one night in a Russian-American gangster's game, Teddy KGB (John Malkovich), takes every dollar he has. He swears off cards to Jo (Gretchen Mol), then his oldest friend Worm (Edward Norton) walks out of prison owing money to dangerous people. John Dahl keeps Mike between his promise to her and his loyalty to Worm, with the same debt pulling at all three.
