“Comedy is not pretty.”

Janet Taylor (Adah Glassbourg) gets laughs from the kids at school by joking about her own weight, and the reaction makes her wonder if she could do it for a living. She walks into a local comedy club and finds Tony Moroni (Jim Carrey), a struggling comic whose jokes aren't landing, and he asks for her help with his act. Glen Salzman and Rebecca Yates build the story around a girl learning that the joke she hides behind is also her talent.
