Sam Manning (Billy Crudup) is a father in a downward spiral after the death of his son Josh (Miles Heizer). Then he finds a box of Josh's demo tapes and lyrics, songs he never knew existed. William H. Macy, in his first film as director, follows Sam as he starts a band with Quentin (Anton Yelchin) to play those songs, and as he learns how much of his son he never heard.
