Ruggles of Red Gap

(1935)Directed by Leo McCarey90 minComedy
“SH-H-H-H! TONIGHT'S YOUR NIGHT TO HOWL! And howl you will at this funniest of all comedies...”

Marmaduke Ruggles (Charles Laughton) is a gentleman's gentleman, the butler to an English Earl (Roland Young), until his master loses him in a poker game. His new owners are Egbert Floud (Charles Ruggles) and his wife Effie (Mary Boland), cattle people from Red Gap who have no idea what to do with a valet. Leo McCarey stages the culture clash with a loose, easy hand, letting the actors drift into the scene instead of hitting their marks.
