“The story of a man apart... who brought faith to a youth, love to a woman, justice to a land!”

Matt Dow (James Cagney), a drifter with a prison record, is made sheriff of a Western town, and he takes a young, unsteady partner, Davey Bishop (John Derek), as his deputy. Nicholas Ray shot it in VistaVision, with Viveca Lindfors as Helga Swenson and Jean Hersholt in his last role. Matt has spent years answering to no one, and now the whole town is looking to him.
