The Civil War has just ended, and Pvt. O'Meara (Rod Steiger), a Confederate soldier who cannot stomach the loss, rides West rather than live under the Union. He joins the Sioux, takes a wife in Yellow Moccasin (Sara Montiel), and tells everyone he will never be an American again. Samuel Fuller shot it in Technicolor, so the plains and the rider crossing them are bleached nearly white by sun.
