In the Pacific during the Second World War, Commander Richardson (Clark Gable) has spent a year behind a desk after the Japanese sank his submarine. He finally gets another boat, and Lt. Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), his executive officer, soon sees that Richardson cares only about the one destroyer that put him there. Robert Wise keeps the two men in the cramped steel hull, one pulling the crew toward his grudge, the other holding to the oath of his rank.
