The Popes pack up again and change their names, as they have since the late sixties, when Arthur (Judd Hirsch) and Annie (Christine Lahti) set fire to a weapons lab to protest the Vietnam War. Their older son Danny (River Phoenix) falls for Lorna (Martha Plimpton) at his new school. Sidney Lumet keeps the family's routines close and ordinary. Danny wants a life of his own, and the only way to have it is to leave the people who raised him.
