“2000 cast members, 3 orchestras, 33 rooms, 300 years, ALL IN ONE TAKE”

A nameless narrator, who seems to have died in some accident, finds himself drifting through the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. A French traveler, the Marquis de Custine (Sergey Dreyden), walks beside him, and they come upon people from three hundred years of the city's history. Aleksandr Sokurov treats the palace as a place where every period is still going on, with the past lingering in the halls.
