Ryan's Daughter

(1970)Directed by David Lean206 minRomance, History, Drama
“A story of love...set against the violence of rebellion”

Nobody in the village will say why the wind on the Irish coast sounds so much like a warning, only that the schoolteacher Charles (Robert Mitchum) married a girl half his age and she has been restless ever since. David Lean sets it in 1917, in a village full of nationalist neighbours, where a wounded British officer, Major Doryan (Christopher Jones), arrives to take command. She watches him, and the whole village watches her, while Charles waits in the schoolroom.
