Sadie McKee

(1934)Directed by Clarence Brown93 minDrama, Romance
“She rose from calicos to silks, with men as the stepping stones!”

Sadie (Joan Crawford) works as a maid in a wealthy house, and she wants out of it, away from the scrubbing and the small town and into a life that belongs to her. Her hopes keep landing on men: Tommy (Gene Raymond), who is not as faithful as he sounds, a drinking millionaire, and Brennan (Edward Arnold), the master of the house. Clarence Brown keeps Crawford in the center of the frame, a maid's uniform on her, her chin up.
