Rama (Kayije Kagame) is a novelist who travels to the courthouse in Saint-Omer to write about the trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanda), accused of leaving her 15-month-old daughter to the rising tide on a beach in northern France. Alice Diop, who sat through the real case that inspired the film, keeps the camera on the witness stand as Laurence's life is told. Rama listens with her own family history and her fears about motherhood pressing closer.
