The Third Crusade has brought European armies to the Levant, and Saladin (Ahmad Mazhar), first Sultan of Egypt and Syria, takes command of the Muslim campaign against them. Youssef Chahine, working from a novel by Naguib Mahfouz, fills the screen with a large ensemble, among them Richard the Lionheart (Hamdy Ghaith) and Princess Virginia of Kerak (Laila Fawzy).
