“The Glory And Excitement Of Rome... In All Its Greatness and Badness!”

Judea in the reign of Tiberius, where the prophet John the Baptist preaches against King Herod (Charles Laughton) and Queen Herodias (Judith Anderson). Herodias wants him dead, and she sees her husband's growing lust for Salome (Rita Hayworth), his long-absent stepdaughter, as the way to bend him to her will. William Dieterle puts Salome in Jean Louis's costumes, at ease in the palace while Claudius (Stewart Granger) waits for her in the shadows.
