“Sometimes redemption is out of reach”

In Bolivia, a salt flat has been poisoned by an ecological disaster, and a volcano nearby is starting to show signs of an eruption. Laura Sommerfeld (Veronica Ferres), a scientist, holds the head of a large company responsible, and a man named Matt Riley (Michael Shannon) is caught up in a hostage-taking tied to the damage. Herzog, who wrote the film, sets all of it against the glare and emptiness of the landscape.
