Salvatore Giuliano

(1962)Directed by Francesco Rosi119 minCrime, Drama, History

Salvatore Giuliano's body lies facedown in a courtyard in Castelvetrano, a handgun and a rifle beside him, and the press arrives to ask how the most wanted man in Italy ended up there. He was twenty-seven. Francesco Rosi answers by going back through 1943 to 1950 and the trial that followed, with Gaspare Pisciotta (Frank Wolff) among those caught up in it. He shoots it like a documentary, in flat light, with the camera held at a distance.
