A feudal lord takes the mother of his only heir, and the decision is not up for discussion. Her husband Yogoro (Gō Katō) and his father, Isaburo Sasahara (Toshirō Mifune), a samurai who has spent his life obeying, must decide whether to accept it or risk death to bring her back. Masaki Kobayashi, working from a Shinobu Hashimoto screenplay, keeps the camera still and the household quiet.
