San Francisco

(1936)Directed by W.S. Van Dyke115 minDrama, Romance, Music
“She Fell In Love . . . with the toughest guy on the toughest street in the world!”

The great earthquake is coming for San Francisco in 1906, though the people of the Barbary Coast are too busy to notice. Blackie Norton (Clark Gable) runs a saloon there, and Mary Blake (Jeanette MacDonald), a singer with a trained voice, takes a job on his stage while Father Tim Mullin (Spencer Tracy) works to reform him. W.S. Van Dyke sets the two men's old friendship against her gradual pull toward Blackie, with neither of them sure the other will change.
