Sarafina!
“She was their teacher. They were her hope.”
In a Soweto classroom, the teacher Mary Masembuko (Whoopi Goldberg) is taken away by police for her activism, and her student Sarafina (Leleti Khumalo) decides to join the student resistance. She goes home to a grandmother (Mary Twala) who wants her to keep her head down and stay out of trouble. Darrell James Roodt films the singing and marching as one movement, adapting Mbongeni Ngema's stage musical with Khumalo still in the lead role.
