Kansas, 1910. Widowed farmer Jacob Witting (Christopher Walken) can't manage the farm and his two children, Anna (Lexi Randall) and Caleb, on his own, so he places an ad for a mail-order bride. Sarah Wheaton (Glenn Close) answers from Maine and travels west to become his wife, with Glenn Jordan directing. She arrives as a stranger to the children, and her thoughts keep turning to home.
