Wil (Michelle Krusiec) is a young surgeon in New York's Chinese-American community, where her mother keeps trying to marry her off to a nice man at every dinner. Then Ma (Joan Chen) turns up at her door, pregnant and unwilling to say who the father is, and both women are carrying a secret the family would rather not hear. Alice Wu's film makes the plain case that shame passed down through a family is still just shame.
