Sawdust and Tinsel

Albert Johansson (Åke Grönberg) runs a shabby traveling circus and wants to keep it, and the people around him, from falling apart. His lover Anne (Harriet Andersson) is restless, and the wife he left, Alma (Gudrun Brost), is waiting in the town where the show stops next. Bergman films the humiliations of circus life at close range and gives the faces of his actors more time than the spectacle.
