Nobody at school can work out why Diane Court (Ione Skye), the valedictorian with a scholarship waiting, says yes when Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) asks her out. He's a decent, easygoing kid with no plan beyond her, and Cameron Crowe starts them off right after graduation. Her divorced father (John Mahoney) watches from the kitchen, and the two of them have to decide how much they can trust each other.
