Tony Camonte (Paul Muni) is an Italian immigrant in 1920s Chicago, a thug with a scar on his cheek and an eye on his boss's mistress. He shoots his way up through the city's mobs, working for Johnny Lovo (Osgood Perkins) and watching over his sister Cesca (Ann Dvorak). Howard Hawks and Muni give Tony the grin of a man who treats violence as a way to get ahead, and he keeps reaching for more.
