Christopher Cross (Edward G. Robinson) is a middle-aged cashier who paints in his spare time and has never been loved by anyone. He falls for Kitty March (Joan Bennett), who keeps him close while her heart belongs to Johnny Prince (Dan Duryea), a small-time crook. Fritz Lang shows what happens when a man gives away his name and his money for someone who only pretends to care.
