Schalcken the Painter

Godfried Schalken (Jeremy Clyde) is a young painter apprenticed to Gerrit Dou (Maurice Denham), and he is in love with Dou's niece Rose (Cheryl Kennedy). Her uncle's studio is where they meet, until a wealthy and ghastly suitor, Vanderhausen (John Justin), appears and sets his eyes on her. Leslie Megahey adapts Le Fanu's 1839 story for the BBC, and Schalken has to find a way to keep Rose before it is too late.
