Paul (Jean Scandel) is a stubborn city boy who has never seen anything but the high walls of an orphanage near Paris. In 1930 he is sent to the Sologne to live with Célestine (Valérie Karsenti) and her stiff husband Borel (Éric Elmosnino), gamekeeper of a vast estate of forest, misty ponds and heath. Nicolas Vanier sets him down among the poacher Totoche (François Cluzet) and the silent old Count, and Paul has to find a place there before he is sent back.
