Carlin (Ray Winstone) arrives at a borstal with a name for trouble and one aim, to be left alone. The guards would rather he were broken, and they lean on the ward's leader, Pongo, to do it. Alan Clarke made this as a BBC play in 1977, and Carlin's bond with Archer (David Threlfall), a quiet boy trying to get through the ward unnoticed, is the one thing in the place that isn't about power.
