Danny O'Neill (Fred Astaire) plays trumpet in the Perennials, a college band, and has stayed enrolled for seven years by flunking his exams on purpose. His rival Hank Taylor (Burgess Meredith) plays the same horn and has done the same. H. C. Potter sets the two against each other for the band manager, Ellen Miller (Paulette Goddard), each one trying to charm her and get the other thrown out.
