Secrets of a Soul

(1926)Directed by G.W. Pabst75 minDrama
“A Psychoanalytic Thriller”

In a German household of the mid-1920s, the chemist Martin Fellmann (Werner Krauss) cannot pick up a knife without picturing his wife, Seine frau (Ruth Weyher), under it. The compulsion follows him into sleep, where the nightmares grow stranger each night, until a psychoanalyst offers to look into them. G.W. Pabst films the dreams as superimposed, unsteady images, so the camera itself seems to come apart as Martin's mind does.
