Sergeant Rutledge (Woody Strode), a respected Black cavalry sergeant, is dragged before a court-martial charged with raping and killing a white woman and murdering her father, his commanding officer. John Ford builds the trial from testimony, as Lt. Tom Cantrell (Jeffrey Hunter) defends him one witness at a time. Rutledge faces the gallows if the officers on the board believe the worst of him.
