Sergeant York

Alvin York (Gary Cooper) is a Tennessee hillbilly known for his sharpshooting, and he becomes a religious pacifist, a change the film treats as a question to be worked out. Then the country calls him to serve, and he has deep moral objections to fighting. Howard Hawks keeps Alvin's bond with Pastor Rosier Pile (Walter Brennan) at the center, a quiet friendship between a young man and the minister who guides his conscience.
