A war orphan walks into a black market in the immediate aftermath of World War II and finds a crowd of people scrabbling to get by. Shinya Tsukamoto follows the boy among the stalls and the people who depend on them, in a country that has lost the war and the world it knew. For all of them, each day comes down to whether there is food.
