It's 1941 and Nick Charles (William Powell) and his wife Nora (Myrna Loy) take their young son to a big horse race, where the grandstand is packed and a man is killed in front of the crowd. Nick starts asking questions, and the trail runs through bookmakers, crooked officials, and rival gangsters, with Nora at his elbow the whole way. W.S. Van Dyke keeps the case moving at a brisk, light pace and lets the married couple's banter carry most of the scenes.
