Why does a celebrated writer, who explains suffering and faith to anyone who asks, live so quietly among Oxford's dons with his brother Warnie (Edward Hardwicke)? Richard Attenborough follows C.S. "Jack" Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) to the day a spirited American poet, Joy Gresham (Debra Winger), enters that routine and starts asking him questions he can't brush aside. Jack, a man of lectures and tea, finds he has no easy answer for her.
