War reaches the rural island where Eva (Liv Ullmann) and Jan (Max von Sydow), two former violinists, are trying to keep a farm running. Ingmar Bergman follows a couple who have never taken a side, now accused by one faction of sympathy for the other. The marriage is already frayed, and with nowhere safe to go, everything they have left is at risk.
